THE PRIME SPOT Radio Show is turning into the BEST COMMUNITY RADIO show on a college station! BRIAN SNELSON, author of SHATURANGA.com called in, not only with book signing dates but he shared information on www.OURLEILANI.com The illustrator of the book, RODNEY SELLARS (theyearzero.com) has a little girl who was in an accident on Mother's Day a few years ago who is now a quadriplegic. Check out her site for info on the WALK FOR LEILANI and if you don't or can't walk, you can always "sponsor".....
Hopefully some of the musicians from the upcoming LONGBEACHCELTICFESTIVAL.com will call in for a "Take Five" while we play music from their CDs this Friday; Check out WOLFSTONE.CO.UK and CELTICSPRINGBAND.com, the latter being referred to as California's "Von Trap Family." The most recent "blocks" of music we played hailed from this upcomign weekend's ROCK THE VOTE Concert (Aug 14th) at DIPIAZZAS.com (Thanks to PETE from the PROMINENT SONS for the heads up!) Along the same musical front was our SPOTlight on the upcoming gigs of THINKING ALOUD (www.thinkingaloudmusic.com), one of the local bands whose CD you can find at IGUANA KELLEY's (www.iguanakelleys.com).
New Music we're playing includes that of RORY JUSTICE, www.THEROCKABILLYKID.com , the 15 year old I had the opportunity to see at KING NEPTUNE's in the 562-area of Sunset Beach the end of July. ( Wow! Only 15 years?! He must have started practicing in the womb to play & sing like that!) In addition to RORY , the FLAMING ACES, BORDER HOPPIN BOYS and 1980s American Standard recording artist "ROCKAHOLICS" frontman KENNY J aka "CRASH" KEN "CRASH" graced the stage. This gig is going places - check out the site to see what state this double-dose of "musical justice" will tour in next so you can tell your faraway friends and relatives!
ThePrimeSpot Radio show's LIVE STUDIO Line is 562-985-2282 from 9-11pm Fridays, although we've been known to answer the main office line and our cell phones during this time as well to catch the oveflow. JAYSON CAMPADONIA, the producer of KFI's JOHN & KEN Show was a recent cohost on KBEACH.org . (Jayson LOVES Long Beach as well as the show!) And, remember Every FIRST FRIDAY at 10pm, poet G.MURRAY THOMAS (NextMag, Poetix.net) SPOTlights local poetry. Listen over the web (kbeach.org), in the csULB dorms or over local cable TV Ch 65 69 95......
JONATHAN RICHMAN ("Something About Mary") played the QUE SERA. (thequesera.com) this past weekend which is where MELISSA ETHERIDGE'S sound used to fill the room. This event is STEVE ZEPEDA's gig. Zepeda, known for bringing the finest to these venues (may they rest in peace): BOGARTS, where I met my ex; "New Music Mondays" at the BLUE CAFE; The FOOTHILL which became the MONTECARLO, recently demolished for housing; and last but not least the LAVA LOUNGE (which I recommended the owners change to JAVA LOUNGE and change into a LONG BEACH SOUVENIR COFFEE SHOP Bowling Alley instead of turning it into a school. But they opted demolishment for condos instead!). Instead of paying the cover charge and not being able to buy a CD, I went to the free instore performance at FINGERPRINTS earlier that day where LOU (I don't even know HIS last name, but he plays DiPIAZZA's and LIQUID LOUNGE soon!) recorded a "Take Five" with RICHMAN. I bought his tunes and got a signed poster as well...
There are a few new nightclubs in town, and THE PRIME SPOT was given a few HOOTIE & THE BLOWFISH tickets to give away on TPSradio. We had a few calls for these, the rest of the takers read the offer on ThePrimeSpot.com (400+ members). I must say VAULT350.com is HighlyRecommended by ThePrimeSpot.com: Great music, great sound, great food, great service in the seated areas!
GOT ROOM? All I know is that I am moving from the sweatbox I've rented (they couldn't PAY me to live here!) where it has taken me up to 45 minutes to find a decent parking spot. Local AL HAMLIN from www.subwaymapguy.com who returned from his year sabbatical in Boston (being a "professional sports fan") is reminded of New York when he hears the phrase, "Sorry I can't drive. I'd have to move my car and lose my parking space...." (People, clean out your garages, it is illegal to use them for storage, and we need your street parking!) Anyway, I am looking for a place, even a roomate situation (I can assist with child/elder/biz/house care as well). Know of a place in 90803, 90804, 90814? An opportunity where I won't have to spend my part-time salary for a roof and four walls
Which reminds me - if any of YOU have had a bad experience with a local property management company, I want to hear from you. I have a feeling this company has a long "rap sheet", which may be why their turnover is so high... My neighbor just got billed for the plumbing stoppage belonging to the apartment below. (Hair? This guy has a crew cut! Is this even legal?) Email theprimespot@aol.com (your 411 will remain confidential), subject heading "Bad Property Management" with the name of the firm and your sad story......
I think I might have started a trend in "tagging." When my garage was broken into (when I lived in the hood), I warned my alley-neighbors with a message written with chalk on my garage door for a day. (Since it's illegal to post flyers in most places). Recently I drove down the street and noticed someone's grafitti was half erased. Is the punishment less severe when you "Chalk it Up?"
For the entire month of August Joe Jost’s will celebrate their 80th Anniversary. They recently gave a day's income to CSULB's 49ers. Phone: 562.439.5446 2803 East Anaheim Street Long Beach, CA 90804 Keep in mind that Long-Beach-Arts.org will also turn 80 this year!
If you haven't seen the beautiful, fact-filled DESTINATIONS magazine, pick one up at the LONG BEACH AIRPORT. While waiting for transportation, sipping your KONA JOE, take note of LONG BEACH's newest magazine published by the LB Biz Journal people. July's ("swimming" issue (a collector's item?) contained "Me&Mo"s ad for local radio & tv. This month's column spotlights the EAST VILLAGE ARTS DISTRICT. All issues including breathtaking pictures of the LBC's THOMAS McCONVILLE (www.proimaginggroup.com)!
KaRi is a nondisruntled postal worker in search of a roomate and also a kidney. (The latter is for a creative guy in Long Beach. Must be healthy and O+ bloodtype. Call 562-804-5625). She is also interested in speaking with those who have been in a "bait and switch" situation while apartment hunting.
