6th Annual Haute Dog Howl'oween Parade is World's Biggest (Come enter or watch the biggest Halloween pet event in the world as it returns to Long Beach on Sun., Oct. 29) Sun., Oct. 29, 2:30 p.m., Start/finish: Livingston Park, Livingston Dr. @ Park Ave., Long Beach. Dog food for a year and lots of other great prizes for best costumes on dogs. Thousands of dogless gawkers line the 12-block parade for charity that features approx. 600 dogs in colorful costumes as they march down the trendy business district sidewalks of 2nd Street in Belmont Shore. Free to watch. Entrants are sought! To be in the parade, simply register at the event for $10 per dog. Festivities begin at 11 a.m. and activities will include a pet adoption fair, preliminary costume judging (2 p.m.), a 50-lb. pumpkin dropped from a high tree branch, vendors, disc dog demonstrations, canine Bobbing for Howl'oweenies, a bulldog kissing booth, and more. $10,000 was raised last year and more is expected this year as the day raisees funds for Long Beach-based 501c3 nonprofit Community Action Team of which Haute Dogs and Operation Santa Paws are a part. REGISTRATION & YAPPY HOUR Pre-parade "feast"-ivities will include vendor booths, bobbing for Howl'oWeenies, a dog treat stacking contest, a Bulldog Kissing Booth, disc dog demonstrations (Disc Dogs in So. SPECIAL THANKS To Recreation Dog Park Assoc. for their support of our events, including the Haute Dog Easter and Howl'oween Parades and the Bulldog Beauty Contest. WHO WILL BE GRAND MARSHAL? The top-three fundraisers (in order) will be our Grand Marshals. As in the past, each dog/owner in the parade will be asked to donate $10 to Haute Dogs. In addition, those who turn in at least $25 on parade day will receive a free Haute Dog t-shirt; and, those who turn in at least $35 will be classified as V.I.P. (very important pooch) and will get to walk near the front of the parade and will get a free Haute Dog t-shirt. Finally, for those who want to go the extra mile and help collect pledges to benefit Haute Dogs, there will be the chance to lead the 550-dog parade. Pledges should be turned in at the registration tent on the day of the parade before 2:30 p.m. All checks collected should be made payable to "Haute Dogs." Start collecting those pledges today! PARADE ROUTE The 12-block sidewalk parade will step-off at 2:30 p.m. from Livingston Park heading south on Park Ave. to 2nd St. Then east on the sidewalks of Second St. to Granada Ave., then west on the sidewalks of Second St. to Park Ave., then back to Livingston Park. JUDGING Judging will be based on originality, showmanship, detail of costume and first impression. ANNUAL GREAT PUMPKIN DROPPED FROM A HIGH TREE BRANCH Times Square drops a big ball to celebrate the new year. Belmont Shore drops a giant pumpkin to celebrate the start of Howl'oween! We'll drop it around 2 p.m.! This annual 45-lb. pumpkin drop will be a smashing hit! BOBBING FOR HOWL'OWEENIES FUNNY! Dogs of all sizes will take turns grabbing floating wieners from a pale of water, a la "bobbing for apples." DOG TREAT STACKING CONTEST It's tricky! Human contestants of all ages will have 30 seconds to see if they can create the tallest tower of dog biscuits. CANINE COSTUME CATEGORIES Prizes will be awarded to the judges' favorite top-10 entries, plus these three overall awards: best "float," best overall canine costume (on any one dog) and best "group theme." A "float" is any decorated non-motorized device used to pull or push a costumed dog(s) along the parade route. The "best group theme" award winner(s) must include a min. of one dog and one human (examples: one dog and two handlers dressed up; or, two dogs and an owner dressed similarly with a theme) who parade together. An "entry" can be a costumed dog with or without a "float." An entry can also be a group of dogs or one dog with a group of people. AWARDS & PRIZES - top 10 prize packs will be given to the judges' top-10 favorite entries. Those 10 winners will be a combination from any of the following categories: individual dogs, groups, or floats. - best costume on a dog This is our grand prize and the winner will get Natural Balance dog food for one year, courtesy of Natural Balance Pet Foods, Belmont Pets & LaunderPet and Seal Beach LaunderPet. - NEW CATEGORY: best costume on a person in the parade Prize to be determined. - best group (see category descriptions above) Winner gets a $200 gift certificate from Teddy Eddies. They are also a vendor at the event. - best "float" any dog(s) riding in/upon/within a moving, non-motorized device; such as a wagon or pulled cart. Prize to be announced. Bulldog Kissing Booth THIS YEAR, the Bulldog Kissing Booth presented by Howl'oween Parade organizer Justin Rudd & his Bulldog named Rosie hopes to raise several hundred dollars for Operation Santa Paws - a holiday toy/treat drive that benefits more than 4,000 shelter and rescue animals. For a $1 donation, visitors to the bulldog kissing booth will get a big, wet kiss freely given by one of about 20 English bulldogs who will take 10-minute turns hosting, licking and raising funds for charity. Bring your camera!
