JUSTIN RUDD'S 100TH CONSECUTIVE MONTHLY
“30-MINUTE BEACH CLEANUP” TO CELEBRATE
ON SAT., SEPT. 15 IN LONG BEACH - 10,000+ bags of trash!

On Sat., Sept. 15 at 10 a.m., Justin Rudd's "30-Minute Beach Cleanup" will host its 100th consecutive monthly beach cleanup. Since the first cleanup in June 1999, volunteers have tirelessly met on the 3rd Sat. of every month at the end of Granada Ave. (with some additional ˝ hour events after Jan. 1, July 4 or major storms) and have cleared more than 10,000 bags of trash from Long Beach’s beaches. The 30-Minute Beach Cleanup will celebrate with volunteers and city dignitaries immediately following the Sept. 15 half-hour cleanup. The public is invited and needed to help clean and celebrate. The cleanups now average 150-175 volunteers year-round. The day is also Calif. Coastal Cleanup Day.

The 30-minute volunteer celebration will begin at 10:40 a.m. and will include:
- free hot dogs provided by the Long Beach Fire Dept.;
- a brief awards ceremony to recognize at least three individuals and six organizations/businesses that have made outstanding contributions to the monthly cleanups;
- extra door prizes;
- extra refreshments;

- free beach cleanup t-shirts to any volunteer who has been to at least two cleanups ($5/shirt for anyone else);
- and brief words from a few city councilmembers, dignitaries and park/rec/marine staff.

The 30-Minute Beach Cleanup, which celebrated its eight-year anniversary in June 2007, seeks volunteers to help create a clean and safe place on the beach each month. Volunteers are asked to wear shoes and sunscreen. The cleanups end at 10:30 a.m.

The 30-Minute Beach Cleanup is part of its founder Justin Rudd's 501c3 nonprofit "Community Action Team (CAT)." Some other CAT events include the world-famous Belmont Shore Haute Dog parades; July 4 Kids' Bike Parade; Long Beach Turkey Trot 5K/10K; and Spelling Bees for kids and for adults.

As with all the cleanups, volunteers are given free bags, gloves, refreshments, door prizes (like Aquarium of the Pacific tickets), parking, and credit for volunteer service hours and merit badges. Volunteers progress toward the Belmont Pier and the Peninsula.

Bags and gloves are provided by the Long Beach Dept. of Parks, Recreation and Marine's Adopt-A-Beach program; JetBlue Airways, and the beach maintenance department. Refreshments are generously donated monthly by Duthie Power Services and JetBlue Airways.

"Tons of debris foul the sands and endangers human and canine visitors and aquatic wildlife," said Justin Rudd, founder/organizer of the 30-Minute Beach Cleanup. He also started the three-year old Long Beach off-leash dog beach. "We are looking for families and individuals of all ages to come out and support the effort to help make Long Beach's beaches safe, clean and beautiful."
